Afraid of Losing Your Teeth to Receding Gums? A Dentist Says It's Not Too Late. Here's Why.
Told you need a gum graft? Got a tooth that feels loose? Read this before your next appointment. Receding gums have one cause. Stop it, and you save your teeth.

Every week, someone sits down in my chair and asks me the same question.
Quietly. Like they're bracing for bad news.
“Am I going to lose my teeth?”
Some were just told they need a gum graft. Some got the quote and sat with it in the car.
Some have a tooth that moves when they push on it.
Almost all of them tell me the same thing:
“I can't stop thinking about it. Even at night.”
If that's you, I want to tell you what I tell them.
It's not too late.
You can stop your gums from receding. You can make them strong again. And you can save your teeth.
But first, you need to know what's causing it.
Because I'd bet nobody has ever really told you.
You've Been Lying Awake Over This
It usually starts in the mirror.
Bright light. Lip pulled down. The same tooth, every morning.
It looks longer than it used to. That's your gum receding. You can see the root now.
Cold water makes it hurt. Your gums bleed when you brush.
Then the real fear sets in.

You've read about deep pockets and bone loss at 2 a.m. You know a 5 means the pocket is getting deeper.
You've pictured the graft. They cut a strip from the roof of your mouth and stitch it over the root.
People who've had one call it “gum torture.” Some say the roof of their mouth stayed sore for a year. Some say the first graft didn't even take.
And you've seen the bill. $2,000 or more a tooth. People post their quotes online: $8,500 for four teeth.
So you're stuck.
You're terrified of the surgery. And you're even more terrified of losing the tooth.
Maybe you watched your mom lose her teeth. Her dentures in a glass by the bed.
Now you wonder if you're next.

Every choice feels like losing.
I see that fear in my chair every week.
And almost everyone who feels it feels it for one reason: nobody ever showed them what's really causing it.
So let me show you.
What “Keep an Eye on It” Really Means
Here's what it looks like from my side of the chair.
A patient sits down. She brushes twice a day. She flosses. She switched to a soft brush years ago, the minute someone told her she brushed too hard.
She has done everything right.
My hygienist measures her gum pockets and calls out the numbers.
Three. Four. Four. Five.
She thinks it's a report card. She thinks she failed.
Then one of us says it. “Let's keep an eye on it.”
So she goes home and tries harder. Six months later, her pockets are deeper. Her gums have receded more.
For years, I said “keep an eye on it” too.
Here's what I tell patients now:
It was never your effort.
What's making your gums recede is somewhere your toothbrush, floss and mouthwash can't reach.
Not once.
The Real Reason Your Gums Keep Receding
Your gums are held to your teeth by collagen.
Think of it like the elastic in a fitted sheet. When the elastic is strong, every corner hugs the mattress. Eat away at it, and one corner slips. Then the next.
That's what's happening to your gums. Something is eating the collagen that holds them to your teeth.
And it isn't your age. It's something you can stop.
Under your gum line, all the way around every tooth, there's a tiny pocket.
I call it the Sub-Gumline Inflammation Loop.

That one loop causes everything you've noticed.
It's why your gums are receding. It's why they bleed. It's why your pockets keep getting deeper.
And if it runs long enough, it doesn't stop at the gum.
It eats into the bone that holds your tooth in place. The tooth gets loose.
That's how people lose teeth. Gum disease is a leading cause of tooth loss in adults.2
It isn't your age. It isn't bad luck. It isn't your brushing.
It's inflammation under your gum line.
One cause. And that means one fix.
Why Nothing You've Tried Could Stop It
Your toothbrush, floss and mouthwash all do a job. Just not this one.
Your toothbrush cleans your teeth and stops at the gum line. Scrub harder, and you only wear your receding gums down faster.
Floss and mouthwash clean between and around. Neither one stops the inflammation inside your gum.
A deep cleaning scrapes the bacteria out of your pockets. But they're back in about 60 days.3
Twice a year, the dentist's chair reaches the inflammation.
The other 363 days, nothing does.
It was never your fault. It was your tools.
Before They Cut the Roof of Your Mouth
Here's where “keep an eye on it” ends.
“You need a gum graft.”

A graft covers one exposed root with tissue from the roof of your mouth.
But it doesn't stop the inflammation that caused the recession.
So the recession keeps spreading. To the tooth next to it. Then the next one.
That's how one graft turns into two.
There's only one way to stop it: stop the inflammation.
Stop it early, and you can avoid ever needing a graft. Already booked? Keep your appointment, and stop it so you never need a second one.
So what can stop it?
Your Body Is Built to Heal. Here's What's Stopping It.
Think about what your body does on its own.
A deep cut closes up. A scraped knee grows new skin. A broken bone knits back together.
Your gums are living tissue. They want to heal too.
They just can't while the inflammation keeps eating them.
Stop the inflammation. Boost the repair. Your body does the rest.
The bleeding stops. Your gums get firm and strong, and hold your teeth tight. The recession stops.
And you save your teeth.
So the only question left is this:
What can stop the inflammation under your gum line, every single day?
Nothing in your bathroom can.
But light can.
The Light Dentists Already Trust
Try one more test
Shine your phone's flashlight through the tip of your finger.
It glows red.
That's light going right through your skin. And your gum is thinner than your finger.
Red and near-infrared light do three things to living tissue.
They shut down inflammation. They bring in fresh blood and oxygen. And they give your cells the energy to repair.
The science name is photobiomodulation. Most people just call it red light therapy.
It isn't new. And it isn't fringe.
- NASA-funded researchers aimed red and near-infrared LEDs at painful mouth sores in children. The pain dropped by nearly half.4
- Red light has been tested in hundreds of clinical trials.5 A 2023 review of 8 of them found that adding light to gum treatment beat gum treatment alone.6
- Gum specialists already use lasers and red light on gums. After deep cleanings. After gum surgery.

So why isn't everyone doing it?
Because you only get it in the chair. A few minutes, a few times a year.
And the inflammation never stops.
To stop it, you need that light on your gums every day. At home. Without adding one more thing to your routine.
For years, I had nothing like that to offer my patients.
For the skeptics (I was one)
- 660nm red light shuts down inflammation inside your cells. Used after a deep cleaning, it reduced sensitivity at 7 and 30 days in a 112-patient double-blind trial.8
- 830nm near-infrared light goes deeper. Added to a deep cleaning, it shrank gum pockets more than the cleaning alone.9 It boosts blood flow and the cells that make collagen.
- The numbers: nearly half of adults over 30 have gum disease, and 7 in 10 over 65.10 88% of people over 65 have receding gums on at least one tooth.11

Then Someone Put It in a Toothbrush
When I first heard about a toothbrush with red and near-infrared light in the head, I rolled my eyes.
I've seen every gimmick. Charcoal. “Gum-rebuilding” pastes. Gadgets that light up and do nothing.
But this one does what the dentist's chair can't.
It puts the light on your gums twice a day, in the 2 minutes you already brush.
It's Dentra's red light toothbrush. They call the technology inside DualSpectrum Therapy™.

So I tested it. I gave it to 250 of my patients and tracked what happened.
*From Dr. Oslaf's study of 250 patients.
And here's the part that surprised me most.
Some of my patients swear their teeth look shorter now. Their gums look fuller.
I hear that a lot now.
Now I recommend it to every patient with receding gums. Especially anyone afraid of losing a tooth, or told they need a graft.
How DualSpectrum Therapy™ Works
It's a full sonic toothbrush. It cleans like any great electric brush.
But the head has two lights built in. Two lights, two jobs.

One brush. One fix for all of it. The bleeding, the receding, the deep pockets. They all come from the same inflammation. DualSpectrum stops it.
And its Sensitive mode is actually gentle.
Plenty of sonic brushes sell a “sensitive” mode that barely slows down. On receding gums, that wears them down even more.
Its Sensitive mode drops to 21,600 a minute, on soft BPA-free nylon bristles.
So while the light heals below, nothing wears your gums down from above.
You don't add a step. You upgrade the one you already do.
Same 2 minutes. Now it saves your teeth.

In Their Own Words
My mom lost most of her teeth by 60 and I've been terrified of going down that road.
I started paying attention to my gums way too late. Since switching brushes they look less inflamed and I don't dread brushing anymore. I just want to keep my own teeth.
I was quoted almost $4,000 for gum grafting and honestly cried in my car afterward.
I'm still working with my periodontist, but I wanted to do more at home too. My gums look noticeably better after just a couple months. Wish I'd started taking this seriously years ago.
For 3 appointments straight it was always "we need to watch these pockets."
At my last cleaning my hygienist said my gums looked better and there wasn't as much bleeding. I can't say it's all from the brush but it's the main thing I've changed at home.
I thought $139 for a toothbrush was ridiculous.
I've bought so many special toothpastes and rinses that never made much difference. This is actually a nice brush even without the lights. The sensitive setting is gentle and my gums aren't as sore after brushing. Keeping it.
I'm 63 and my bottom teeth have been looking longer for years.
No, my gums haven't magically grown back. But the redness has settled down and they look healthier around the teeth. I'm just trying to protect what I still have at this point.
Every time I brushed there was blood in the sink.
I used a soft brush, flossed, bought the expensive mouthwash, everything. After a few weeks with this brush my bleeding stopped. It's nice not feeling like I'm making my gums worse every morning.
Your First 90 Nights
Here's the plan I give my patients.

Your gums are inflamed, so go gentle. Within days, the swelling goes down. By week 2, the bleeding stops.
Your gums tighten. Your teeth may look slightly longer for a few days. That's the swelling going down. It's a good sign. Trust the process.
Your gums are firm and healthy. No swelling. No blood on the floss.
Your pockets are shallower. Your hygienist notices.
Is $139 a Lot for a Toothbrush?
It is. Here's what it costs not to.
One graft costs more than 14 of these toothbrushes.
That's about 38 cents a day for the first year.
Your $139 Can Come Back. Your Teeth Can't.
Still unsure about spending $139? Good. Here's how to take the risk off the table.
Try Dentra's red light toothbrush for 90 nights, counted from the night it arrives.
Not for you? Email them. They send the label. You get every penny back.
So your money is safe either way.
Your teeth aren't.
Every month the loop runs, it takes more gum. Then bone. And nobody can refund a tooth.
The only way to lose is to keep watching.

The Questions Patients Ask Me Most
“I've been told I need a graft. Is it too late?”
No. A graft patches one root. The red light toothbrush stops the inflammation that's receding all the others. Already booked? Keep your appointment, and start brushing with light tonight so you never need a second graft. Not booked? Start now, while it's one tooth.
“I have a loose tooth. Can this help?”
A loose tooth means gum disease has reached the bone. Show your dentist this week. Then start brushing with light tonight. Strong gums hold teeth tight. That's how you save that tooth, and the ones next to it.
“Will my gums grow back?”
What matters most is stopping the recession and making your gums strong. DualSpectrum Therapy™ does both. And some of my patients swear their teeth look shorter.
“My gums are sensitive. Will a sonic brush make it worse?”
Not this one. Sensitive mode drops to 21,600 a minute on soft bristles. Start there for 2 weeks. Within days, the soreness and swelling go down.
“Is this just another gimmick?”
I thought so too. Then I tested it on 250 of my own patients. 86% stopped bleeding within 2 weeks. 97 in 100 people who buy one keep it. And you get 90 nights to try it, or every penny back.
“Why not wait for my next appointment?”
Because receding gums don't wait. Every month, they recede further. Start tonight, and walk into that appointment with 90 nights of light behind you.
“Is the light safe?”
Yes. It's gentle LED light. No laser. No UV. You'll feel the brush. You won't feel the light.
90 Nights From Now, You'll Be One of Two People
The nights pass either way.
If you keep waiting
Your gums keep bleeding and receding. Your pockets get deeper. Then a tooth gets loose. And the word changes to “graft.” Then “implant.”
If you start tonight
The bleeding stops. The recession stops. Your gums get firm and strong. At your next checkup, your hygienist checks twice. And you sleep at night, because you know you're saving your teeth.
Same 2 minutes either way.
You came here scared you were going to lose your teeth.
Here's what I want you to leave with.
It's not too late. Inflammation is the cause. And inflammation can be stopped.
Stop the inflammation. Strengthen your gums. Save your teeth.
You're not the one keeping an eye on it anymore.
You're the one who stopped it.
Dr. Erin Oslaf, DDS
P.S. If you're up late reading this, scared again, here's the short version. Your gums keep receding because of inflammation under your gum line. Nothing at your sink could reach it. Dentra's red light toothbrush stops it twice a day, in the 2 minutes you already brush. Try it for 90 nights. Your money can come back. Your teeth can't.
